Professor Ranganath Bharadwaj
Professor R.Bharadwaj (M.A.Ph.d) had a
distinguished academic career. He has been
continuously
in the teaching profession for over 40 years. He is currently the Chairman of
Institute for Educational Research and Development (IERD), Mumbai and Bangalore.
He holds specializations in International Business, International Trade,
Economic Growth, Inflation and Related Issues, Corporate Governance and Foreign
Investments. One of the top ranking Economists/econometricians /methodologists
in the country Prof.Bharadwaj has many notable contributions to his credit. He
has authored many books including Managing Limits to Growth and papers which has
won acclaim from India and abroad. He has also been the initiator of the
“Structural Method” – an alternative methodology forged in response to the
deepening methodological crises in social sciences, including economics and
education.
After completing his training in Mumbai and
later at the Harward University, U.S.A. Professor Bharadwaj joined the
Department of Economics at the University of Mumbai in the last quarter of 1962.
Since then, his research efforts have centered around evolving an appropriate
framework for social policy. This search was tackled from three distinct though
interrelated angles:
- Resolution of certain long - standing theoretical issues
- Construction of a competent - wise structural framework for policy.
- An examination of the mathematical properties and stability conditions of such
a framework.
These explorations have led him not only into almost every area of Economic
Theory but also that of pure mathematics, mathematical statistics and
econometrics. The framework he has developed has been currently empirically
articulated and the same is being widely applied. Several Ph.D. Dissertations
have been completed along his methodology. The methodology has also been
subjected to a critical scrutiny at a meeting of experts drawn from various
disciplines organised under the auspices of UGC’s University Leadership
Programme. The meeting endorsed the scientific soundness and empirical
potentialities of the contribution.
Professor Bharadwaj’s research interests are not confined to Economics alone.
Some of the methodological contributions (as yet unpublished) have important
philosophical implications. Several articles have exposed the current crisis in
education.
Under Professor Bharadwaj’s direction /supervision,several
surveys/projects/Workshops/seminars have been conducted both in the Department
of Economics, University of Mumbai (of which he was the Director), and in the
Institute for Educational Research and Development.
His contribution, The Structural method, is a mathematical procedure for
locating an extrema without the assumption of continuity.
